PARKING CHANGES

Effective August 9, 2010, two changes will take place with parking operations on the Auraria Campus.  The Tivoli parking lot is no longer the visitor lot with hourly rates.  It is now a pay-on-exit lot with a daily fee of $6.00.   Additionally, the TAPS parking structure has become the visitor lot for the campus with a cost of $1.50 per half hour, or any fraction thereof, with a student maximum rate of $8.00 per day (students must present campus ID). Validation for parking in the TAPS structure must be obtained prior to exit.  Departments issuing validations should remind visitors to bring the spitter ticket with them to be stamped.

Questions regarding the parking changes can be directed to Auraria Parking & Transportation Services by calling 303.556.2003.

CELL PHONE RECYCLING

The student-funded Auraria Sustainable Campus Program (SCP) is expanding its already stellar recycling program and joining a national movement working to recycle cell phones and mobile devices.

The SCP is partnering with The Wireless Alliance, a Boulder-based company, to provide a recycling station where students can toss their old phones. The kiosk is located on the second floor of the Tivoli Student Union, right in front of the Auraria Campus Bookstore.

Phones and mobile devices, as with any electrical devices, contain precious metals. The circuit boards in cell phones contain myriad toxins such as arsenic, antimony, beryllium, cadmium, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc. Also, the lithium-ion and nickel-metal hydride batteries contain heavy metals such as cobalt, zinc, and copper. These metals are a serious environmental threat to humans and ecosystems when cell phone and mobile devices are thrown out in the landfill and the metals leach into the surrounding soils and waters. One cell phone with battery, if thrown away, can pollute up to 40,000 gallons of water -- staggering when you consider the average cell phone is only used for about eighteen months.  It is estimated that over 150 million cell phones will be thrown away this year alone.

The Wireless Alliance extracts the precious metals from old phones that can no longer work which prevents pollution. Additionally, the remaining phones are data-wiped, refurbished, and donated to low-income families across the country which reduces the need for new phones to be manufactured.

The Auraria Sustainable Campus Program is excited to join with The Wireless Alliance, which already works with dozens colleges across the country, including several in Colorado, such as CU-Boulder. Together these campuses have recycled tens of thousands of cell phones.

For more information regarding cell phone recycling, contact Andy Pattison, AHEC Sustainability Officer at 303-556-3297 or by e-mail at andy.pattison@ahec.edu.

NORTH CLASSROOM BUILDING RENOVATION
March - December 2010

Beginning Monday, March 22 and continuing through December 2010, contractors working on the Auraria Science Building Project will be completing the renovation of the second and third floors of the North Classroom Building.  Specific interior and exterior closures during the project are listed below and are detailed in the attachments with this notice.  All work will be coordinated with occupants that will be affected by the renovation.

SECOND FLOOR WORK:
Above ceiling demolition, plumbing installation and ceiling replacement from 2204, 2205, 2206, 2208 and 2404 will occur from Monday, March 29 through Monday, April 26, 2010.  The work will begin at 10:00 p.m. each night, and will be complete by 7:00 a.m. each morning and will not affect normal operations in this area of the building.  This work will be coordinated with the occupants of those rooms affected.  Signage will be placed around the area with specific closure and detour information.

THIRD FLOOR WORK:
The contractors will completely renovate laboratories and office suites 3014, 3016, 3101, 3103, 3107, 3112, 3114, 3202, 3204, 3205, 3206, 3207, 3208, 3209, 3211, 3214, 3215, 3403, 3406, 3407, 3410, 3411, 3413, 3414, 3415, 3416, 3417, 3419 and 3515 from Monday, March 29 through December 2010.  This area will be closed to the general public and separated from the remainder of the building by temporary partitions.  Additionally, restrooms inside the construction area will be unavailable for use. Details of the area closed to the general public can be found in the attached PDF (North Class MOP Plan Views Final).  Signage will be placed to assist the general public in negotiating through the closures to gain access to adjacent areas of the building.

Additionally, a set of stairs on the north side of the building will be closed to during the duration of the work.  The doors accessing the stairs will be locked and there will be a temporary partition with signage in place to restrict access. The freight elevator accessed near the northwest entrance will be restricted to construction personnel, facilities, deliveries, and persons with disabilities during construction hours.  Signage will be posted on all floors with instructions on how to use the radio to call the elevator operator.  During non-construction hours the freight elevator will be returned to normal operation.

EXTERIOR OF THE NORTH CLASSROOM BUILDING:
The contractors will erect a construction fence on the north side of the building and signage will be added around the perimeter of the fence.  The exterior area that will be closed for construction is detailed on the attached map (Exterior North Class Plan).

Please refer any additional comments or questions regarding this project to Mike Turman with Jacobs at 303-556-2394 or by e-mail at mike.turman@jacobs.com.

NEW FENCING FOR SCIENCE BUILDING PROJECT

The construction fence that is currently in place for the Science Addition construction will be moved to fence the construction area required for the renovation of the Existing Science Building.  The new layout of this fence is scheduled to run from December 14, 2009 through November 2010.  The fencing change will have the following impact on the campus:

  • Fourteen (14) handicap spaces will be temporarily unavailable. Four (4) spaces will be added adjacent to the library.  The handicapped parking changes have been coordinated with Auraria Parking Services.  Signage will be in place to notify users that the handicap spaces will be unavailable starting January 2010.
  • The bike racks in front of Existing Science will be relocated near the entry area adjacent to the new courtyard and entry to the Science Building Addition.  The blue star on the map below represents where the bike racks will be relocated (reminder: bikes should be walked as this area is a dismount zone).
  • The contractor will provide signage for faculty, staff and students to guide pedestrian traffic around the new fencing  layout.

The red-dashed line on the map represents new fencing.

AHEC ANNOUNCES ONLINE H1N1 CAMPUS RESOURCE GUIDE

The Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC) has launched a new web page designed to give the Auraria Campus community the vehicle to easily find H1N1 flu information, especially as it pertains to the campus.

The web page (www.ahec.edu/h1n1) features flu-related information and direct web links to campus, state and national health organizations such as, the Health Center at Auraria, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Ready Colorado, and Flu.gov; the nation’s designated website for flu information.  Additionally, the web page provides updated information regarding when and where to get flu shots, educational information, and tips for staying healthy and providing care to anyone who has been infected with the flu virus.

AHEC has also added a flu-related option for callers to the Auraria Campus.  When calling the main campus switchboard, 303-556-2400, option 6 will allow callers access to recorded information about seasonal flu and H1N1 flu, or connect them directly with the Health Center at Auraria.

The Auraria Campus reminds everyone to get a seasonal flu shot as soon as possible, in an effort to avoid contracting the virus.  Those at high risk (seniors, people with diabetes, women who are pregnant, or anyone under the age of 19) are especially encouraged.  To find a convenient location for receiving the seasonal flu shot, go to www.immunizecolorado.com.
